In this level, you will learn the basics of Western music theory.

So you will begin to read notes and learn about intervals, the building blocks of our music theory. Then you will start working on scales and building chords. Rhythmically, you will learn all kinds of note values and time signatures. You get a good music theory foundation and learn to understand how the music you listen to and make is put together.

2. Intervals & scales

  • History and overview of the many different scales

3. Chords
  • All kinds of chords

  • The relationship between scales and chords

4. Note Values & Metrics.
  • The different note values
  • Rest
  • Measure types and bar lines
  • Learning to read time signatures 4/4, 3/4, 8/8 and 6/8
Massimo Raoul Beckers (1994)

Born in Switzerland, Massimo Raoul Beckers grew into a versatile musician and researcher. He graduated from the University of Maastricht (UM) with a Bachelor of Arts & Culture and from the University of Amsterdam (UvA) with a Master of Musicology. Then he decided to study at the Conservatory in Utrecht (HKU) and focus on his own compositions, bass guitar and improvisation. He also did training as a conductor at the Multi-Year Conductor Training (MDO).

Coach

As a music teacher, Massimo has many years of experience and thanks to his academic background, he is has a lot of knowledge about all kinds of musical styles, music history and ways of composing. His work as a conductor ensures that Massimo is immersed in specific musical details and developing a good listening ear.

Music is a language, which many musicians speak fluently. If you want to co-communicate, you have to master this language, the language of music theory. The theoretical side behind music is not only incredibly useful to know and learn to speak, but can also help you in inspiring new ways of composing and understanding music.
