Hermine Deurloo from Amsterdam, trained as a saxophonist, picked up the chromatic harmonica after hearing Toots Thielemans. Although she has her roots in jazz, her musical activities are very broad. She takes the sound of the harmonica into new and unusual territories, including modern classical, string quartets, big bands, African music and film soundtracks.
Teaching and coaching
Hermine enjoys teaching both absolute beginners and advanced harmonica players. She can give advice on simple exercises to improve technique and tone, how to start improvising and how to play a melody. Hermine prefers to teach a short course or a master class after which you can study independently with the material you have learned.
Collaborations
Over the years she has performed with a variety of jazz musicians and orchestras, including the Metropole Orchestra, The Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Al Jarreau, Kevin Hays and Jim Black. Her 2020 album features drummer Steve Gadd.
