Het album van de Britse pianiste/componiste Julie Sassoon op het Berlijnse Jazzwerkstatt Label is een live solo piano cd getiteld ‘Land of Shadows’. De muziek ontvouwt haar Duits-Joodse identiteit – een thema dat sinds haar verhuizing van Londen naar Berlijn in 2009 een prominente plaats in haar werk heeft gekregen. Julie heeft eerder concerten in het ‘Pianolab’ in het Goethe-Institut Amsterdam gegeven.
RBB Kulturradio heeft haar concert in de grote synagoge van Berlijn opgenomen en uitgezonden. Dit was onderdeel van Julie’s Duitsland-tour in het voorjaar van 2012. Concerten in het Bauhaus, Dessau en in het Loft in Keulen maken eveneens deel uit van de cd. Het resultaat is een heel diep en uniek album.
Het soloconcert dat zij met het Enrico Pieranunzi Trio tijdens het ‘London Jazz Festival’ gaf, was een groot succes … ‘The Guardian’ beschouwt dit als één van de ‘top ten highlights of the festival’.
