Cengiz Arslanpay(1989) is a multi-instrumentalist, sound designer, music technologist and composer. His music is particularly notable for combining authentic primal instruments with electronic sounds. With his collection of flutes from all over the globe he creates a wide variety of sound worlds. He is mainly specialized in playing the Ney (reed flute).

Teaching and coaching

Cengiz’s lessons are intended for instrumentalists who have an affinity with the theory and practice of early Ottoman music or Turkish Art music. Cengiz is an excellent player of the Ney and has knowledge and experience in repertoire of this music. In workshops and lessons the focus is on the different tonalities within the music system, compositional styles and instrumentation.

Cengiz studied Music Technology & Performance at the HKU, after which he also obtained his Master of Music in microtonal composition. During his graduation, he researched the applicability of traditional elements from Turkish art music in contemporary Western composition techniques. His thesis focused on the connection between East, West, traditional and modern.

Theater and film

In addition to his solo works, Cengiz’s music can also be heard on theater and film. For example, in 2019 he composed music for the theater show SSST! by ‘Studio Figur’ in collaboration with Sebastiaan Bax, made a major musical contribution to a Buma Award winning short film ‘In de Zomer’ in collaboration with Wouter van den Boogaard and in 2020 for the short film ATILLA by Alkan Coklu provided music in collaboration with ‘Studio Mengelmoose’.

On stage Cengiz is mostly an improviser. He is fascinated by the ability to respond in the moment with sounds and the freedom of expression in the now.

Collaborations

Besides his regular ensemble ‘SonCe’ in which his flutes and electronics can be heard, he has had the opportunity to work with various ensembles such as: Klaas Hekman, Ab Baars, Alan Purves, Chris Reinier(VN) , Marcel Kuipers, Wu Wei(CHN) and many others.

Cengiz’ his technological skills can also be heard in sound installations BOOM for ‘t festival ‘Twee Turven Hoog’ and ‘Octosyn’ for ‘Amsterdam Cello Octet’ conducted by Rob van den Broek (visual artist) for which the composer Maxim Shalygm wrote his composition called ‘Severade’. In these works, the emphasis of his work is on developing programming of Arduinos, sensor techniques, driving stepper motors, making efficient cable plans and adding interactive sound elements into the whole.
